Welcome to week 5 of Micro UX: Feminist space. In this blog I have presented our documentation of testing different materials, trying out different structures and performing a few activities to clearly understand the design and utilization of our feminist space.

- Roadmap -

- Research on Material and Structure -

While exploring different structures the concept of building a Tetris landscape structure stood out to us. So we began with experimenting with miniature model and then shifted into building life-sized blocks first with the help of cardboard.

After creating a rigid block we did a series of quick test with different people with different body weight to see if our structure can hold the weight of any individual siting on it. And it was a Success!!

While a few of us worked on the structure, the rest focus on designing the technical aspect of our protype.

Once our sensors worked and the structure could hold enough weight, we were finally relieved that our design would not just exist in the presentation.

The above picture shows the team taking a small break after successfully accomplishing the task we set out to do.

- Activity: Bodystorming -

Since our musical cubes were supposed to be moved around by people to sit where ever they wanted, thus creating their own space, we wanted to perform a small bodystorming activity were we ask observe a few participants organizing a few chairs in a given space.

We gave each participant a particular music (ambient music) to play on their phone while they rearranged their space and spoke to their friends. Later we asked them about their experience and what changes they would bring to the setup.

Their response were as follows:

  1. The music was distracting while trying to hold a conversation.

  2. The music does not add to the space to create an ambience, rather is can be a source of disturbance during a serious conversation.

  3. The ability to arrange the seats and curate their own space helped them to engage more with their friends

Realization:

  1. The need of music in the space need some deliberation.

  2. People enjoyed having a sense of free will when dealing witha space.

- Presentation -

In our presentation, we delved into the finings from our activity and the sturucture we created. We aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject by highlighting the key points and discussing the implications of the results. Through this analysis, we were able to identify trends, correlations, and potential future directions for further investigation. The presentation served as a platform for sharing our findings, fostering dialogue, and inspiring further exploration of the personalizing a public space to curate to people better.

- Evaluation & Feedback -

Finishing the final week, our prototype was presented. We deliberated about what we did in our project thus far. After seeing the demonstration the class came up with the following insights to aid us with our concept and design further down the road: 1. The cube was structurally sound so we were heading in the right direction. 2. Bringing in the sense of free will in the space more actively. 3. We were encouraged to try out different shapes other than a cube as well.

- Reflection -

After analyzing the feedback we realized that we need to further our research on this topic. We decided to explore more in terms of the materials we could use while make it relatively more and more cost effective. We decided to explore more on the topic of bringing in the sense of free will in the space and experiment with it.
